David Sterling, whom i will now refer to as “Lego genius”, has constructed a scale replica of the NES using strictly Legos. This particular dose of nostalgia is two fold for a young man such as myself. I for one loved the NES, and think its one of the greatest gaming systems ever created. And what 80’s baby didn’t thoroughly enjoy Legos? For those who can appreciate…enjoy!

NUD (Non Urban Dictate) is the acronym for a very subtle and little-known marketing term specifically directed toward people of color.

‘Non Urban Dictate’ These three words essentially mean that a company is not interested in the Black consumer. A NUD label means that a company does not want their marketing and advertising materials placed in media that claim an urban audience (black folks) as their main target. There are legitimate reasons for companies not using urban radio. It may be that Blacks don’t index high in certain categories or that a company’s strategy is to market to the Black consumer down the road after they have established a strong position in their primary target. But, NUD usually means that a company is not interested in the Black consumer. Companies evade discrimination liability by embracing it as theory rather than policy. As a service to Black consumers, the Urban Institute will list all companies that have a NUD policy. Armed with this information, we feel that Black consumers will be able to make informed buying decisions.

The upcoming DJ Hero game looks like a lot of fun, but unlike Rock Band where you can actually learn to play the drums, no one’s pretending a high score will earn you a DJ’ing career at your local clubs. The Discover DJ system from Ion Audio also isn’t a guaranteed ticket to DJ super stardom, but it looks like a cheaper way to see if you’ve got the mixing and scratchin’ chops before you drop the cash on a couple of real 1200s.

The faux turntables feature a couple of natural-feeling ’scratch’ wheels (though smaller than the real thing) as well as the mandatory cross-fader, bass & treble dials and pitch controls. It connects to your PC via USB and includes the MixVibes DJ software which allows you to scratch and mix with any song in your iTunes library. Pricing and availability to be announced.

Mikey is a nice, solid-feeling little mic for the iPod or iPhone. When used as a voice notes recorder, holding it up to your mouth, the standard setting of sensitivity doesn’t offer much of a difference versus the built-in mic. The ability to set the sensitivity for other uses, however, makes a big difference.

Setting it on a table to record an interview or conversation, for example, results in distant-sounding and quiet audio using the built-in mic. With the Mikey set to the most sensitive setting, however, the audio comes across clearly and loudly. For louder recordings, such as concerts, it’ll do its best to keep things from getting overblown. If you use that low-sensitivity setting for normal use, of course, you won’t be able to hear a thing.

At $80, it’s tough to recommend for casual users, but for people who want to turn their iPod or iPhone into a more versatile portable audio recorder, it’s pretty great.

And a note: while the Mikey isn’t certified for use with the iPhone, and will prompt you to put it into airplane mode if you plug it in to an iPhone, it works just fine. Blue Microphones tells me that the next version will be certified for iPhone and will lose the prompt. [Mikey]
